湯銘哲校長(中排中間)與校友們大合照。 東海大學校長湯銘哲與董事會董事長汪群從, 8月18日來到新澤西州, 這是湯校長美國行的第九天, 第六場募款餐會, 由大紐約區校友會會長蘇贊良組織。大約50名校友在東布朗士維克的餐館內, 聆聽了湯校長(博雅教育的綠色大學〉的理念, 並為母校出錢出力。 溫文爾雅的湯校長在演講一開始就分享了一項令人振奮的好消息, 今年五月底, 未來事件交易所在全國大學評鑑中, 公佈了東海大學榮登台灣私立大學第一名, 公立大學的第一名則為台灣大學。目前台灣共有160餘所大學, 其中私立大學共有90餘所, 這一份殊榮實屬不易。 湯校長此行之目的, 不但要維持東海於台灣第一, 並要推展博雅教育的綠色大學理念, 諸多的理想希望得到校友們的回饋。 什麼是博雅教育(wide liberal)? 湯銘哲校長說, 「我們希望每一位東海人都是有品格、有全球知識和觀點、有深刻人文關懷的世界公民。」這就是符合博雅教育特質：自我探索, 勇於做自己, 自我學習, 與欣賞他人的文化。 綠色大學 GREEnS：Global Research& Education on Environment and Society, 目標在協助台灣建構低碳、綠色的循環型經濟社會體系。期許東海成為我國綠色產業、社會與環境均衡發展的重要智庫和夥伴。 雖然東海大學榮登台灣私立大學第一, 湯校長也指出, 目前東海大學的劣勢, 體育館老舊, 當年設計為容800學生體育館, 而現在東海大學學生已高達一萬五千人；圖書館的設備亦老舊與不敷使用。體育館與圖書館的興建已是刻不容緩。湯銘哲說, 大學評鑑, 這一些硬體設施往往是重要的評鑑項目。 湯銘哲校長在美國的行程共十九天, 要走訪九個城市。許多校友體貼地說：校長, 辛苦了。湯銘哲校長說, 「上台演說及表演是老師慣常的工作, 看著校友們感動的神情, 以及遞送支票之恭敬, 旅途之疲憊, 早已忘到九宵之外了。」「經過這一趟, 我的嗜好又多了一項, 那就是募款。」 湯銘哲在今年2月剛出任東海大學第八任校長一職。湯校長畢業於台北醫學院, 並在美國取得密西根大學醫學博士。2001年至2007年任成功大學醫學院副院長, 2007年至2011 年任教務長。 李美倫

We have 50 alumni came to the gathering dinner even though some of alumni were unable to attend this time.
